The renting of a vehicle from a Schiphol car hire company would be better recommended for exploring the countryside than for driving in Amsterdam. Amsterdam’s city centre is made up many narrow, winding streets that make driving very difficult. Even the locals prefer to take the train, tram or bus rather than driving their own car. However, outside of Amsterdam, the Netherlands offers and excellent series of highways that makes driving to cities like Rotterdam, Den Haag (The Hague), and Groningen a pleasure. The highway system is also convenient for international destinations such as Brussels, Dusseldorf and Luxembourg. Driving in the country side is beautiful, as there are canals, windmills and the Netherlands world famous tulips along the roadways. There are also no toll highways in the Netherlands.

If you do decide to drive in the city of Amsterdam, here are a few helpful tips and considerations:

  • Car travel is on the road’s right-hand side and trams should also be passed to the right.
  • Bikers and pedestrians have right of way!
  • If you are driving along the canal, keep on the canal’s right-hand side as all the streets in the canal ring are one-way on the right hand side.
  • Drivers have to wait behind unloading trucks.
  • There may not be any traffic signals at intersections by the canal bridges, therefore handle them cautiously. Always treat them as four-way stops. Use caution at all intersections in Amsterdam.

Another reason why locals and tourists prefer not to drive in Amsterdam is that there are no free parking areas in the city centre. The only free parking may be at some hotels for their guests. Otherwise, parking must be found along the street or in a parking garage, for example, the garages of Bijenkorf (Dam). Here parking is available for up to 487 cars. For street parking, tickets from one of the readily available Blue ticket machines are required. Parking charges are 2.60 per hour. Beware that parking machines do not give change. Leave your ticket where it can be easily seen in the window to avoid being ticketed or clamped. It is also encouraged to display a “no valuables inside” sign, as car break-ins are common.

To rent a car in the Netherlands, the individual must be 19 years of age or older. They must be in possession of their driver’s license for at least one year. A young driver surcharge may be added to the rental costs for drivers under the age of 25. Your driving license from any other country will be valid in Amsterdam for six months. Thereafter, your driver’s license should be exchanged for the official Netherlands driving license.

In the city the speed limit of 31mph or 50kph should be adhered to. The open roads are 49mph/ 80kph and the highways 75mph/ 120kph.
